The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert predicting a three-day spell of dust haze across the country from Monday to Wednesday. This development, announced in NiMet’s latest weather outlook on Sunday, signals potential disruptions in visibility and respiratory health concerns for residents.

NiMet forecasts that the northern states will experience moderate dust haze on Monday, with visibility ranging from 2 to 5 kilometers, though localized areas may witness visibility drop to as low as 1 kilometer. The North Central region is also expected to encounter moderate dust haze under similar conditions during the same period.

“As dust particles are in suspension, the public should take necessary precautions,” NiMet advised, particularly urging those with asthma or respiratory ailments to remain vigilant about the changing weather.

By Tuesday, visibility in the northern parts is expected to worsen, with thick dust haze predicted throughout the day. For residents in North Central states, conditions will remain hazy, with visibility likely limited to between 1 and 3 kilometers.
Meanwhile, southern Nigeria’s weather is anticipated to feature early morning mist or fog in coastal regions, followed by moderate dust haze later in the day. Visibility in these areas is projected to range between 1 and 3 kilometers from Monday through Wednesday.

“Residents in the South should prepare for misty or foggy mornings and moderate haze later in the day, which could pose challenges for navigation and transportation,” the forecast detailed.
As the atmospheric dust increases, NiMet reiterated the importance of adhering to safety precautions. “People with respiratory conditions such as asthma should limit outdoor activities during this period,” the agency stressed. Dusty conditions could aggravate respiratory problems or trigger allergic reactions.

Airline operators were specifically advised to obtain weather reports for their operational routes, ensuring proper flight planning. “Airport-specific weather documentation is crucial for safe and effective operations during this time,” NiMet noted.
Dust haze is a recurrent weather pattern in Nigeria during the Harmattan season, a dry and dusty phase occurring between November and March. These conditions arise from dry northeasterly trade winds sweeping across the Sahara Desert.

The intensity and impact of dust haze can vary each year, influenced by factors such as desertification and global climate patterns. Typically, the northern and central regions bear the brunt of these weather disruptions, with transportation and health systems often facing added pressure.
NiMet underscored the importance of staying informed about the evolving weather. The agency’s website, www.nimet.gov.ng, provides up-to-date forecasts, and NiMet has advised citizens to access this resource regularly.

“Residents are urged to keep themselves informed and heed the advisories issued by NiMet and other relevant authorities to minimize the impact of these weather conditions on daily life,” the agency stated.

The latest alert adds to a growing emphasis on proactive measures for public safety during seasonal weather disturbances in Nigeria. While weather forecasts offer crucial guidance, the effectiveness of such advisories hinges on widespread awareness and timely response by individuals and institutions alike.
As dust haze sets in for the week, individuals are advised to minimize outdoor exposure, use protective gear like face masks where necessary, and stay hydrated to mitigate potential health risks. Transport operators, particularly those in the aviation industry, must adopt stringent planning practices to ensure safe navigation during these low-visibility conditions.
