In a dramatic political gathering that underscored loyalty, alliances, and shifting power dynamics, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, took a firm stance on the importance of loyalty in governance. Speaking during a luncheon at his Port Harcourt residence, Wike offered direct advice to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, stressing the need to respect and involve those who supported his rise to power.
“No one can achieve anything in politics without the support of others,” Wike stated emphatically, addressing Okpebholo directly. “Adams Oshiomhole wanted to be governor, but he needed people to vote for him. It’s the same for everyone. God’s will works through people, and loyalty to those who backed you is non-negotiable.”
The luncheon, attended by political stakeholders and associates, served as a platform for Wike to reflect on his political journey and deliver a pointed message about the volatile nature of alliances. “If you follow my political history, you’ll know it has never been easy. I’ve faced charges of murder and armed robbery—all for politics. But at the end of the day, perseverance wins,” he remarked, alluding to his tumultuous career.
Wike Stands by Tinubu
Amid ongoing criticism of his political decisions, Wike reiterated his unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 general elections. “I have no regrets supporting Tinubu,” he declared. “Those making noise today were the same people who campaigned against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, calling him unfit for leadership. Now, they are his biggest supporters.”
Wike’s comments also included sharp criticisms of those he accused of insincerity within the political landscape. “In 2023, they said Atiku was coming. I asked, ‘Where?’ They collected his money and abandoned him. Whatever you cannot do, admit it, and let others know where you stand.”
Okpebholo’s Strategic Appointment
Interestingly, Wike’s remarks coincided with a major political development in Edo State. Governor Monday Okpebholo announced the appointment of Chief Dan Orbih, a close ally of Wike and the National Vice Chairman (South-South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the chairman of the Governing Council of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma.
The appointment, effective December 31, 2024, was revealed in a statement by the Secretary to the Edo State Government (SSG), Umar Ikhilor. “The Governor has approved the reconstitution of the university’s governing council. Chief Dan Orbih will serve as chairman,” the statement read. The council includes six other distinguished members, all of whom bring extensive expertise to the institution.
Political analysts see this move as an olive branch extended by Okpebholo toward Wike’s camp, suggesting a calculated effort to strengthen ties within the party’s South-South faction.
Power Shifts and Future Implications
Wike’s fiery remarks at the luncheon and Okpebholo’s strategic appointment underline the ongoing power tussles within the PDP and Nigeria’s broader political arena. The FCT Minister did not shy away from highlighting the hypocrisy he perceives among political actors. “One day, it will all come to light. When the time comes, we will know who is who,” he said, leaving his audience with a sense of foreboding.
Observers point to Wike’s influence as a testament to his resilience and ability to navigate Nigeria’s treacherous political waters. His alliance with Tinubu has been a contentious subject within the PDP, especially given the party’s internal crises. Nevertheless, his continued relevance suggests that his strategic decisions are paying off.
