Imo Gov Offers Amnesty to Unknown Gunmen, Pledges N50m Slain Women’s Families

In a heartfelt appeal to curb insecurity in Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodinma has urged unidentified gunmen terrorizing parts of the state to abandon their weapons and reintegrate into society. The Governor pledged government support to help them rebuild their lives, offering financial aid and vocational opportunities to those willing to contribute positively to the state’s development.

Uzodinma made this plea during the funeral of Jenny Rachael Okonkwo, the former Woman Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Orlu zone. Okonkwo, who was murdered alongside four others in 2022, became a tragic symbol of the political violence gripping the region. The slain women were reportedly abducted and left lifeless in a bush, an act Uzodinma strongly condemned.

    Justice and Support for Victims

Speaking at the somber gathering held in Ogberuru, Orlu Local Government Area, the Governor expressed grief over the circumstances of Okonkwo’s death, describing her as a loyal party member and a dedicated mobilizer.

“Jenny was not just an APC member; she was a passionate organizer who worked tirelessly for the progress of the Party and the state. Her assassination was a cowardly act by political opponents who couldn’t match her commitment,” Uzodinma lamented.

To honor her memory and support the grieving families, Uzodinma announced financial assistance of ₦10 million to each of the deceased families. He further promised employment opportunities or vocational training for their children, stating, “We will ensure that their children do not suffer for the evil deeds of others. If they are employable, we will absorb them into the system; if not, we will provide the skills they need to thrive.”

    A Plea for Peace

The Governor also used the occasion to extend an olive branch to gunmen who have taken to violence, urging them to embrace peace. “I call on all those still hiding in the bushes to drop their arms and join hands with us to build a better Imo State. The government is willing to assist you in starting any legitimate business you choose to engage in,” he said.

Addressing the broader issue of insecurity in the region, Uzodinma blamed unscrupulous politicians for instigating violence, alleging that they recruited outsiders to perpetrate the killings. “These killings are not just acts of violence; they are politically motivated schemes by individuals who do not wish this state well,” the Governor alleged.

He expressed optimism that the tide was turning, saying, “The people of Orlu are beginning to understand the true enemies of peace. Those behind these heinous crimes will not go unpunished; the wrath of God will surely catch up with them.”

    Condemnation of Political Violence

The Governor didn’t mince words about the dangers of using violence as a political tool. “Those who shed innocent blood for political power will face divine judgment. What you sow is what you will reap,” he said, in a message directed at political actors suspected of fueling the unrest.

Okonkwo’s assassination was a stark reminder of the rising tensions in Imo State, particularly in Orlu zone, a region that has seen an alarming increase in politically motivated killings. Uzodinma called on all affected by the tragic loss to remain steadfast in their commitment to the APC and the state, urging them to resist the intimidation tactics of political adversaries.

    Building Party Unity Amid Crisis

In his address, Uzodinma extended his condolences to members of the APC, particularly Camp Hope, a faction within the party that has been instrumental in maintaining unity despite the challenges. “I commend your resilience and efforts to keep the party together during these trying times. Stay firm and committed, and I assure you, you will not regret your allegiance to this great Party,” he said.

The Governor’s remarks also emphasized the role of conscience and moral accountability in governance and politics. He reminded those present that every action would ultimately be judged, whether by man or by God. “If you are innocent, God will vindicate you; if you are guilty, you will answer for your actions, both here and in the afterlife,” he warned.

    Hope for a Peaceful Future

Uzodinma’s call for peace and reconciliation comes as Imo State battles waves of insecurity, particularly in rural areas where attacks on civilians and political figures have become common. His promise of government assistance aims to provide a pathway for individuals involved in violence to reintegrate into society.

While the Governor’s assurances and financial commitments were well-received by many mourners, there remains skepticism about whether these measures will effectively address the root causes of insecurity in the state. Critics argue that more robust security reforms and community-based initiatives are needed to restore lasting peace.
