The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Secretariat in Abuja witnessed dramatic scenes on Monday as embattled National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu resumed office, amidst a heated tussle for the position with Ude Okoye. The ongoing leadership crisis has thrown the party into disarray, with both men laying claim to the influential office.
Anyanwu’s return was marked by an unusual ritual as he sprinkled anointing oil on his office furniture before taking his seat. This symbolic act, observed by a few supporters and party staff, underscores the intensity of the feud that has drawn attention beyond party lines.
The Origin of the Crisis
The conflict dates back to Anyanwu’s decision to contest the Imo State governorship election against incumbent Governor Hope Uzodinma. To participate in the election, Anyanwu vacated his position as National Secretary, creating a vacuum in the party’s leadership.
In his absence, Ude Okoye assumed the role, arguing that Anyanwu had forfeited his claim to the office by stepping aside. Following the election, which Anyanwu lost, he sought to reclaim his position. However, Okoye challenged his reinstatement in court, setting off a legal battle that culminated in the Court of Appeal ruling in Okoye’s favor.
Last week, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, acknowledged the court’s verdict, recognizing Okoye as the legitimate National Secretary. “The PDP holds the judiciary in high regard and respects the pronouncements of the Court of Appeal,” Ologunagba said in a statement.
Anyanwu Stands His Ground
Defying the court ruling, Anyanwu insisted that the matter is far from settled. “The case is now before the Supreme Court, and there is a stay of execution on the Appeal Court’s judgment,” he stated during an impromptu briefing at the Secretariat.
When asked about the party’s official recognition of Okoye, Anyanwu dismissed Ologunagba’s comments as personal opinions rather than a definitive party stance. “The National Publicity Secretary’s statement reflects his own perspective, not the position of the PDP,” he asserted.
Supporters Rally Behind Anyanwu
Anyanwu’s return to the Secretariat was accompanied by chants of solidarity from his supporters, who staged a peaceful protest at the party’s headquarters. Holding placards and singing, they reaffirmed their belief that he remains the rightful National Secretary.
One protester, who identified herself as Chinyere, expressed frustration over the party’s internal divisions. “The PDP cannot afford this kind of crisis now. We need unity, not infighting,” she said.
A Party in Turmoil
The power struggle over the National Secretary position has exposed deeper fractures within the PDP, a party already grappling with electoral losses and dwindling influence. Analysts argue that such internal disputes could further weaken the party’s chances of reclaiming power at the national level.
“This isn’t just about Anyanwu and Okoye; it’s about the PDP’s inability to manage transitions and power-sharing agreements,” political analyst Dr. Rufus Ibe observed. “The party risks alienating its base if these issues persist.”
Minimal Security, Maximum Drama
Despite fears of a possible clash between supporters of the two claimants, the situation remained largely peaceful. Arise News reported a minimal police presence at the Secretariat, a stark contrast to the tension surrounding the matter.
Anyanwu took the opportunity to inspect the offices, signaling his intention to resume full duties. Meanwhile, Okoye has not made any public appearance at the Secretariat since the court ruling.
The Road Ahead
The PDP now faces the challenge of navigating this internal crisis without further damaging its credibility. With the matter awaiting the Supreme Court’s decision, both factions appear to be digging in for a prolonged battle.
Legal experts have warned that the party’s public acknowledgment of Okoye could complicate Anyanwu’s appeal. “A stay of execution doesn’t negate the party’s obligation to comply with the current court ruling,” Barrister Femi Adekunle explained.
As the PDP leadership deliberates on its next steps, many are watching to see whether the party can resolve this crisis without further alienating members and supporters.
