In a bold declaration of intent, newly appointed Super Eagles Head Coach, Éric Chelle, has pledged to implement an aggressive attacking strategy to rejuvenate Nigeria’s senior men’s football team. Speaking during his official unveiling on Monday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, the Franco-Malian tactician emphasized the importance of goals in football.
“Football is about scoring goals, and I favour an attacking style,” Chelle stated confidently. “This is a tremendous opportunity, and I am grateful to the NFF, the NSC, and Nigerians for trusting me with this role. Coaching the Super Eagles is a dream come true, and I will give my utmost to ensure the team excels.”
Chelle, a former Mali international with five caps, brings a wealth of experience from his playing days at clubs such as Valenciennes, Lens, and FC Martigues. His appointment signals a new era for Nigerian football as the country sets its sights on qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is optimistic about Chelle’s potential to transform the Super Eagles. NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, praised Chelle’s professionalism and determination, urging Nigerians to rally behind him.
“I see in Coach Chelle the right spirit and attitude to take the Super Eagles to the next level,” Gusau remarked. “He considers this his dream job, and that passion is a strong foundation for success. We will provide him with all the support he needs to achieve our collective goals.”
Chelle has signed a two-year contract, with the option of an additional year if the team qualifies for the World Cup. Gusau also revealed that Chelle’s team includes three assistants, who will collaborate with existing technical staff to strengthen the Super Eagles’ brand.
As part of his initial assignments, Chelle will oversee preparations for the 8th African Nations Championship (CHAN), working with the Super Eagles B team in Ikenne. Though he will play a supervisory role for now, the coach has expressed eagerness to familiarize himself with the team’s dynamics.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, expressed satisfaction with Chelle’s recruitment process and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the NFF.
“Football unites Nigerians like nothing else,” Dikko said. “The government is ready to provide the necessary resources, but the NFF will lead the charge. Chelle has our full support as he embarks on this challenging yet rewarding journey.”
The Super Eagles’ recent performances have drawn mixed reactions, and expectations for the team’s revival are sky-high. Chelle’s appointment is seen as a pivotal step toward rebuilding trust and delivering results that will excite Nigerian fans.
“I know the expectations of Nigerians,” Chelle acknowledged. “It’s a big responsibility, and I am ready to work diligently with my assistants to bring success.”
The unveiling ceremony, held at the Media Conference Room of the stadium, was a grand affair attended by notable sports personalities and government officials. Among them were Anthony Adeboye, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development; Sharif Inuwa, Chairman of the NFF Technical & Development Committee; and NFF Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen.
Their presence underscored the collective commitment to ensuring the coach’s success. NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, echoed the sentiment: “This is a new chapter for the Super Eagles. With Chelle’s expertise and our support, we can achieve great things.”
Chelle’s vision aligns with the aspirations of Nigerian football enthusiasts, who long for a return to the days of dominance on the African continent and strong performances on the global stage. His focus on attacking football promises to deliver the excitement and dynamism fans crave.
