The mother of the late Nigerian singer Mohbad, Mrs. Abosede Aloba, has issued a strong condemnation against actor Yomi Fabiyi for claiming that Mohbad’s brother, Adura Aloba, may know more about the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death than he has let on. Speaking at a press conference held on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, Mrs. Aloba accused Fabiyi of spreading falsehoods for personal gain and called on God to deliver justice to those involved in exploiting her son’s tragic passing.
Mrs. Aloba, visibly emotional, decried the ongoing public speculation surrounding the mysterious death of her 26-year-old son, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, who died on September 11, 2023.
In her impassioned plea, she stated: “They killed Mohbad, and now you want me to lose his brother unjustly? My son, Adura, knows nothing about the death of his brother. Why would you implicate him in this manner? I lost my precious gift, and I will not let anyone take away my remaining son too.”
The controversy centers around a series of claims made by actor Yomi Fabiyi, who alleged that Adura had privately confided in him, suggesting that he knew details about his brother’s untimely death. Fabiyi maintained that the message he received from Adura’s social media account raised suspicions that there were people within Mohbad’s inner circle who might have had a role in his demise.
In a statement following Mrs. Aloba’s press conference, Fabiyi responded defiantly, standing by his account of the events. He said: “I didn’t come here to hurt anyone. The message I received was from Adura’s handle, and it spoke of the death of Mohbad. You may not know what happened behind closed doors, but I was merely sharing the information I was given. If I knew that someone was involved in a crime, I would be morally wrong not to speak up.”
Fabiyi’s comments seemed to have deepened the rift between him and the Aloba family, especially Mrs. Aloba, who strongly rejected his assertions. She added, “I am not happy that my son Mohbad is no longer here with me. If he were alive, I wouldn’t be sitting here talking to you. They took my precious gift away, and I won’t allow them to destroy my family further.”
She revealed that the message Fabiyi had referred to did not come from Adura, but from someone else entirely. “It was Damola, not Adura, who sent the message to Fabiyi. He even confessed to me and begged for forgiveness when I confronted him. He never intended for this to turn into such a scandal,” Mrs. Aloba explained.
The mother’s accusations of foul play were not limited to the actor. She also hinted at a larger conspiracy to profit from her son’s death, saying, “Those who are using my son’s death for their personal gains, I leave them to God’s judgment.”
Mohbad’s sudden and unexplained death at the age of 26 sent shockwaves through the Nigerian entertainment industry and beyond. The artist, known for hits like “Peace” and “KPK”, had been vocal about his struggles with the music industry, particularly his relationships with certain figures in the business. His passing prompted an outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues, with many questioning whether foul play might have been involved.
In the wake of his death, rumors have swirled about his health and his relationships with some prominent figures, including his former record label, Marlian Music, and its CEO, Naira Marley. However, despite widespread speculation, there has been no official cause of death confirmed by authorities.
The lack of clarity around Mohbad’s passing has only fueled ongoing debates, with many fans and some public figures demanding a full investigation. Despite these calls for answers, no official statements have been made by the Nigerian police, leading to increasing tension within the entertainment community.
Fabiyi, who has long been a figure in Nigerian entertainment, became involved in the drama when he claimed that Adura had confided in him about the cause of Mohbad’s death. His assertion quickly sparked backlash from the Aloba family, who accused him of attempting to exploit the situation for attention. The actor, who has made headlines for his outspoken opinions on other issues in the past, maintained that he was simply trying to bring the truth to light.
“I’m not here to attack anyone. If it wasn’t Adura, then who was it?” Fabiyi continued. “But if someone gave me a message saying they know what happened to Mohbad, I couldn’t just keep quiet. What would you do if someone came to you with that information?”
Fabiyi also pointed out the sum of N3 million that he claimed was part of a transaction linked to the ongoing controversy, suggesting that his role in the matter was not motivated by malice but by a desire for justice.
Despite the personal clashes, one sentiment seemed to resonate throughout the press conference: the need for justice for Mohbad. Mrs. Aloba reiterated that her family still seeks answers and that anyone involved in her son’s death should be held accountable. “I want justice for my son. If my son was killed, those responsible must pay, but I will leave that to God,” she concluded, her voice trembling with emotion.
