Stop Pursuing Tax Reforms; Focus on Rising Insecurity – Norther Group

    Share

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has issued a strong warning to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to address the growing insecurity in Northern Nigeria rather than focusing on controversial tax reforms. The group’s remarks come in the wake of tragic killings in Borno and Zamfara states, where dozens of lives were lost to terrorist attacks.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the CNG condemned the Federal Government’s priorities, describing the administration’s focus on tax reforms as “misplaced” amidst widespread violence and insecurity.

    Fresh Attacks Spark Outrage

The recent attack on farmers in Kukawa Local Government Area, Borno State, highlighted the persistent threat of terrorism in the region. Suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) brutally killed 40 farmers near Daban Leda. These victims were described as ordinary citizens striving to earn a living.

Another tragedy unfolded in Zamfara State, further underscoring the urgent need for government intervention. CNG expressed its condolences to the affected states, calling the incidents “harrowing” and urging swift measures to prevent similar occurrences.

“The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) is deeply saddened by the recent tragic incidents that have once again brought sorrow and grief to our communities in Northern Nigeria,” Charanchi stated.

A Call for Strategic Security Measures

The group stressed the need for improved security strategies, emphasizing the importance of intelligence gathering, advanced technology, and robust community engagement.

“This must include sustained intelligence gathering, robust community engagement, and the deployment of modern technology to ensure precision in security operations. Security agencies must foster stronger partnerships with local communities and vigilante groups to enhance operational effectiveness and reduce the risk of misidentification,” the statement read.

The CNG also warned that neglecting these measures could worsen Nigeria’s security situation, as terrorist groups like Boko Haram and bandits continue to expand their operations into previously secured territories.

    Misplaced Priorities

In a scathing critique of the government’s approach, the CNG accused President Tinubu of failing to prioritize the nation’s most pressing issues. The group argued that insecurity, not tax reforms, should be the government’s primary focus.

“The Federal Government is apparently drifting away into the realm of misgovernance with misplaced priorities while the areas and sectors that need attention most are left unattended,” the group stated.

It further contended that Nigeria’s resources are being wasted on policies that exacerbate poverty and deprivation, leaving citizens vulnerable to violence and economic hardship.

    A Warning for 2027

The coalition reminded President Tinubu that his administration will be judged by the electorate in the upcoming 2027 general elections. According to the group, Nigerians are closely monitoring his leadership, and his actions will determine public perception.

“The CNG reminds President Bola Tinubu that the buck stops with him as Nigerians are closely and carefully scrutinising his administration whose verdict would certainly be passed come 2027,” the statement warned.

    A Hope for Change

Despite its harsh criticism, the CNG expressed hope for a brighter future. It called on all stakeholders to work together toward eliminating violence and ensuring a peaceful and secure Nigeria.

“May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their families find the strength to bear these irreparable losses. Together, we must work towards a future free from violence and fear,” the statement concluded.

    Background on Nigeria’s Security Challenges

Nigeria has long grappled with insecurity, particularly in the North. Groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP have been responsible for numerous attacks, displacing millions and destabilizing communities. In recent years, banditry has also emerged as a major threat, with kidnappings and violent raids becoming commonplace.

The Tinubu administration has introduced reforms aimed at boosting the economy, including controversial tax policies. However, critics argue that these measures have diverted attention from critical issues like security, infrastructure, and poverty alleviation.
