In a sharply-worded response to Sheikh Ahmad Gumi’s recent controversial proposal, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the prominent lawyer for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has lambasted the Islamic cleric for suggesting that the Nigerian government arm Igbo youths in an effort to confront IPOB activities. According to Ejiofor, Gumi’s recommendation is not only reckless but also threatens to further destabilize an already fragile region.
Sheikh Gumi, a known advocate for dialogue with terrorist groups in Northern Nigeria, has recently stirred the pot with his suggestion that the South East should arm its youths to counter the growing influence of IPOB in the region. Gumi’s comments have drawn widespread condemnation, especially from South East leaders and IPOB supporters, who see the remarks as inflammatory and divisive.
A Misguided Proposal
“I categorically condemn Sheikh Gumi’s suggestion,” Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor declared in a statement released on January 27, 2025. “This is a man who has consistently defended terror and banditry in the North. His words are not only irresponsible but potentially dangerous for the fragile peace we’ve been trying to maintain in the South East,” Ejiofor added.
The IPOB lawyer’s statement sought to highlight what he views as Gumi’s deeply misguided attempts to escalate violence in Nigeria. “Gumi has done little to address the insecurity in his own region,” Ejiofor remarked. “Instead, he wants to spread conflict to the South East, a region that has already endured so much suffering.”
Gumi’s Record and Influence
Sheikh Gumi has long been a controversial figure in Nigeria, known for his open defense of extremist groups, including bandits and terrorist organizations operating in the North. Despite his frequent meetings with bandit leaders and his calls for peaceful negotiations with insurgents, his critics argue that his rhetoric only empowers the very groups he claims to engage with for peace.
Ejiofor’s statement took particular issue with Gumi’s perceived role in fostering insecurity across Northern Nigeria. “Gumi is complicit in the growing insecurity in the North,” Ejiofor said, “His role as a negotiator with bandits is well-documented, yet he remains immune to the consequences of his actions.”
A major point of contention, according to Ejiofor, is the situation surrounding one of Gumi’s alleged associates. Recently, an emissary of Gumi’s was arrested by the State Security Service for allegedly promoting banditry. While Gumi remains untouchable, critics like Ejiofor argue that the cleric’s efforts might be covertly enabling the very violence that plagues the North.
The Threat of Divisiveness
The IPOB lawyer’s statement strongly condemned Gumi’s call to arm Igbo youths. According to Ejiofor, such a move would only fuel the internal divisions already present in the region, where criminal elements are disguising themselves as freedom fighters. Ejiofor insisted that the actual threats to security in the South East are not from IPOB, but from criminal gangs seeking to exploit the political tensions in the area.
“It is clear to all discerning Nigerians that the true instigators of violence in the South East are not IPOB,” Ejiofor stressed. “These are criminals who use the cover of the political unrest in the region to wreak havoc.” Ejiofor also pointed to IPOB’s repeated efforts to distance itself from these criminal activities, including a recent press release in which the group offered to collaborate with local security forces to rid the region of these destabilizing elements.
Sheikh Gumi’s proposal to arm Igbo youths, according to Ejiofor, could only exacerbate the problem. “This will pit brother against brother,” he warned, “and create chaos where there was none before.”
A Call for Unity
In his statement, Ejiofor emphasized the importance of unity among the Igbo people in the face of external threats. “Despite all the conspiracies against us, we remain resolute in our determination to protect our land and our people,” he declared. “We will not allow anyone to manipulate us into turning on one another.”
Ejiofor concluded with a firm message to Sheikh Gumi, urging the cleric to reconsider his divisive stance. “The Igbo people have suffered enough. We have learned painful lessons from history. We will not fall for your manipulative tactics,” he said. “Your mission is dead on arrival.”
