Let the Law Take Its Course: RCCG Backs Police Probe of Tiktoker Who Abused Adeboye

In an unexpected twist to the ongoing controversy surrounding the detention of Nigerian TikTok star Olumide Ogunsanwo, popularly known as SeaKing, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has issued a statement urging the Nigerian police to continue with their investigation into the matter, stressing that “the law must take its course.”

SeaKing, who was initially arrested on charges of cyberbullying, recently made headlines when he was rearrested on Thursday at the Lagos State court premises. His detention sparked an outpouring of public support, with some questioning the fairness of the charges against him. RCCG’s General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, had earlier expressed his concerns, calling for SeaKing’s release, but now the Church has clarified that its earlier remarks should not be interpreted as interference with the legal process.

In a statement released by the RCCG Public Relations Unit on Monday, the Church responded to public confusion surrounding Adeboye’s earlier remarks. The statement explained that Adeboye’s call for SeaKing’s release was not an attempt to hinder the ongoing investigation but rather a reflection of the Church’s commitment to forgiveness and reconciliation.

The statement read, “There has been a video in circulation calling for the release of Olumide Ogunsanwo (Seaking303) by Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye. However, it is important to note that the earlier videos containing potentially defamatory statements had not been thoroughly examined.”

The RCCG went on to say that after a careful review of the situation, the church had determined it was essential for the legal process to unfold. “Upon reflection and consideration of the concerns raised, we believe that due legal processes must be followed. We trust that the authorities will carry out their investigations professionally, and a fair conclusion will be reached based on the law.”

While Adeboye’s statements about SeaKing have garnered considerable attention, the RCCG made it clear that it does not intend to interfere in any way with the police investigation, particularly given that a formal complaint has been filed by the Concerned Christian Youth Forum (CCYF) against SeaKing and others. The complaint alleges that Ogunsanwo made defamatory remarks against faith leaders, including Pastor Adeboye.

In the statement, the Church further emphasized that it holds its leaders and spiritual figures in high regard, urging the public to show respect and avoid defamation. “We encourage everyone to engage in respectful discourse and avoid cyberbullying or making inappropriate comments about Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and the body of Christ,” the statement continued. “Respect for spiritual leaders is deeply ingrained in our faith, and we believe in the culture of honor.”

The RCCG also addressed the topic of SeaKing’s arrest, offering further context to Adeboye’s earlier comments. On February 7, during a church service, Adeboye clarified that he had no involvement in the rearrest of SeaKing, nor was he in support of any unlawful actions taken against the influencer. “I heard that someone lambasted me thoroughly. What is my offence? Because I asked my people to fast for 100 days?” Adeboye said during the service, emphasizing that his call for fasting was directed only to members of the RCCG community. “I didn’t ask him. I didn’t even ask anyone who isn’t a member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God to fast—only my children.”

Adeboye further revealed that he had been informed that some individuals, upset by SeaKing’s remarks, took it upon themselves to act and had him arrested. The pastor called for the influencer’s release, adding, “Seaking is fulfilling prophecy.”

Though SeaKing’s comments, which reportedly include accusations against church leaders, have caused a stir on social media, the RCCG’s latest statement seeks to maintain the integrity of the law while upholding Christian values of forgiveness and reconciliation.

The Church’s message also cautioned against online harassment, especially against spiritual leaders who may be criticized for their public positions. RCCG maintains that while constructive criticism is welcome, it must be carried out in a respectful manner that aligns with Christian teachings.

The controversy surrounding SeaKing’s arrest has continued to reverberate on social media, with many supporters of the influencer demanding his immediate release. SeaKing, who has a significant following on TikTok, became a viral figure for his candid and sometimes controversial views on religion and society. His arrest has sparked a wider conversation about the role of social media influencers in shaping public discourse and their responsibility to respect established institutions and figures.

Despite the growing pressure, RCCG’s statement serves as a reminder that while the Church is committed to love and reconciliation, it firmly believes that the rule of law must prevail. The Church has urged the public to avoid jumping to conclusions and allow the Nigerian authorities to carry out a thorough investigation.

As for SeaKing’s fate, the matter now rests in the hands of the police, who will decide whether the TikTok star’s actions warrant further legal action. RCCG’s message is clear: while they may offer support and call for mercy in some instances, they ultimately respect the legal system and encourage others to do the same.

“We will continue to promote a culture of honor and encourage respectful and constructive discussions within the body of Christ,” Pastor Adeboye concluded in the statement. “Let the law take its course.”
