The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art mini drivers’ licence printing farm in Lagos, marking a major milestone in its 37th-anniversary celebrations.

The new facility, which was unveiled on Tuesday, aims to ease the challenges faced by Lagos motorists in obtaining their driver’s licences.

According to the Corps Marshal, Mr. Shehu Mohammed, the new printing hub will significantly reduce waiting times for applicants.

Speaking through Assistant Corps Marshal Godwin Omiko from the Motor Vehicle Administration Unit in Abuja, Mohammed stated that the farm has an impressive production capacity of 1,800 licences per hour, reaching up to 9,000 in just six hours.

Ending the Licence Backlog Nightmare

Lagos State has been grappling with a massive backlog of driver’s licence applications, with an estimated 270,000 cases awaiting processing.

Applicants have often faced lengthy delays due to the centralized printing system in Abuja, leading to frustration among drivers and inefficiencies in the system.

The new mini printing farm in Lagos is expected to tackle this challenge head-on, ensuring faster turnaround times for residents in the South-West region.

“For printing purposes, applicants residing in Lagos State will have theirs done by the new print farm,” Mohammed revealed.

A Game-Changer for the South-West

The facility is strategically positioned to serve all applicants from Lagos and neighboring states, easing the pressure on the Abuja headquarters.

“It is our expectation that this centre will take care of all applicants from the South-West,” Mohammed stated.

He also emphasized the importance of applicants collecting their licences promptly.

“Outstandings not picked are a challenge for us. As long as applicants don’t have the card, FRSC has not finished its job,” he noted.

A Collaborative Effort with Lagos State

The FRSC boss expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its support in establishing the facility.

He assured the public of FRSC’s continued commitment to delivering top-notch services to Nigerians.

“We appreciate the partnership with the Lagos State Government, and we are committed to improving service delivery,” he affirmed.

Lagos Government Welcomes the Initiative

Mr. Abdul Rasheed Muri-Okunola, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, hailed the project as a much-needed intervention.

He expressed optimism that the printing farm would end the long-standing delays experienced by Lagos drivers.

“We hope that with the coming up of the farm, waiting for Abuja to send Lagos driver’s licence will be a thing of the past,” he said.

Muri-Okunola also emphasized the importance of the initiative in enhancing the state’s transportation management system.

Boosting Efficiency and Reducing Bureaucracy

The new printing facility represents a significant improvement in Nigeria’s driver’s licence issuance system, which has long been criticized for its inefficiencies.

Previously, applicants in Lagos had to wait weeks, or even months, for their licences to be processed in Abuja before being shipped back to the state.

This centralized approach often led to delays, logistical challenges, and increased costs for the applicants.

With the establishment of the Lagos printing farm, FRSC aims to decentralize the process, ensuring that licences are printed and distributed locally.

This will not only reduce waiting times but also cut down on administrative bottlenecks.

A Step Towards Digital Transformation

The FRSC’s move to establish regional printing hubs is part of its broader digital transformation agenda.

In recent years, the agency has invested heavily in technology to enhance its service delivery and improve road safety management.

The harmonized database for drivers across Nigeria remains centralized in Abuja, ensuring data integrity and security.

Public Reactions and Expectations

The unveiling of the new printing farm has been met with excitement and anticipation from Lagos residents.

Many motorists expressed relief at the prospect of shorter waiting times and improved efficiency in the licence issuance process.

“I have been waiting for my driver’s licence for over three months now. If this new centre will speed things up, then it’s a very welcome development,” said David Ajayi, a commercial driver in Lagos.

Others praised FRSC’s effort to address the challenges faced by applicants in the South-West region.

“This is long overdue. We’ve suffered a lot with delays. Kudos to FRSC for finally bringing the solution closer to us,” remarked Chidinma Okeke, a resident of Ikeja.

Towards a Seamless Licence Issuance Process

The Lagos Mini Print Farm is a crucial step towards FRSC’s vision of a seamless and efficient driver’s licence issuance system.

With its high production capacity and strategic location, the facility is expected to serve thousands of applicants weekly.

FRSC has also assured the public that all necessary measures are in place to maintain the quality and security of the licences.

The agency urged applicants to utilize the new centre and collect their licences promptly to avoid further backlogs.

A New Dawn for Lagos Drivers

The launch of the mini printing farm marks a new dawn for drivers in Lagos and the entire South-West region.

By bringing the solution closer to the people, FRSC is poised to revolutionize the driver’s licence issuance process in Nigeria.

As the agency continues to innovate and improve its services, Nigerians can look forward to a more efficient and transparent system.

With the Lagos Mini Print Farm now operational, the days of endless waiting and bureaucratic delays are set to become a thing of the past.
