    Share

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest man, has made a remarkable leap on the global billionaire leaderboard, with his net worth soaring to $23.9 billion.

According to the latest Forbes Real-Time Billionaires List, Dangote is now the 86th richest person in the world, up from the 144th position in 2024, when his wealth was estimated at $13.4 billion.

This incredible surge is attributed to his massive 92.3 percent stake in Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, a venture that has disrupted Nigeria’s oil industry.

The 67-year-old industrialist’s rise back into the top 100 richest people globally is a milestone he last achieved in 2018.

Dangote’s financial leap is largely due to the success of his ambitious refinery project.

The $23 billion Dangote Refinery, located on a sprawling 6,200-acre site in the Lekki Free Zone, began operations last year after 11 years of construction.

The refinery, which processes 650,000 barrels per day, is the largest in Africa and the seventh largest in the world.

It has transformed Nigeria from a heavy importer of petroleum products to a net exporter of jet fuel, naphtha, and fuel oil.

    Vision to Transform Nigeria

Dangote sees his refinery as more than just a business success.

In an interview with Forbes, he explained, “I want to provide a blueprint for industrialisation across Africa. We have to build our nation by ourselves… not [rely on] foreign investment.”

His vision is to turn Nigeria, one of the world’s largest crude oil producers, into a leading producer of refined petroleum products.

This would allow Nigeria to compete with European refineries and reduce dependency on imported fuel.

The journey to success wasn’t without challenges.

“It was the biggest risk of my life,” Dangote confessed. “If this didn’t work, I was dead.”

The refinery faced several hurdles, including financing challenges and complex engineering demands.

However, Dangote’s perseverance paid off, solidifying his reputation as a bold and visionary entrepreneur.

    A Hero in Nigeria

Dangote’s rise is celebrated in Nigeria, where he is seen as a symbol of hope and national pride.

Zainab Usman, director of the Africa Programme at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said, “He is seen in most parts of Nigeria as a hero. He is seen as a real industrialist who builds things.”

Chika Ezeanya, a professor of African studies at Soka University of America, added, “He’s believed staunchly in the fact that Nigerians need products that he has to offer.”

    Dominating African Wealth Rankings

Dangote’s fortune places him far ahead of other African billionaires.

He is well above South Africa’s Johann Rupert, ranked 161st globally with $14.4 billion, and Nigeria’s Mike Adenuga, who sits at 481st with $6.8 billion.

His success is not only a personal achievement but also a symbol of African potential on the global economic stage.

    Impact on Global Markets

The Dangote Refinery is influencing global energy markets, causing a significant drop in petroleum imports to Nigeria.

This shift has affected European refiners who traditionally exported to Nigeria.

According to energy intelligence firm Vortexa, Nigeria’s import levels are at an eight-year low.

    Economic Transformation and Future Outlook

Dangote’s ventures are more than just business enterprises; they are part of his mission to transform Africa.

His companies produce cement, sugar, salt, and now refined petroleum products, reducing Africa’s dependency on imports.

He is paving the way for industrialisation in Africa, creating jobs and wealth within the continent.
