Osun State’s newly elected local government chairmen were sworn into office by Governor Ademola Adeleke on Sunday, but their tenure comes with a strict warning: stay away from local government council secretariats to maintain law and order. The directive has set the stage for heightened political tension in the state, as the newly-elected officials navigate their responsibilities.

The 30 newly elected chairmen and vice-chairmen, who won office under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), took their oaths of allegiance and office at a ceremony held at the Osun State Government House. Despite the celebratory atmosphere of the occasion, Governor Adeleke made it clear that he was taking a firm stance against any potential disruptions in governance.

In a strong address to the newly inaugurated officials, Adeleke emphasized that his government was fully committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and the smooth running of the state. “It is imperative that you stay away from the local government councils for now,” he warned. “We cannot afford to allow any actions that might spark unrest or conflict. Our priority is the welfare of the people and peace within our borders.”

The directive followed concerns over possible conflicts that might arise from lingering political rivalry and a series of recent clashes that have threatened the stability of the local government areas. According to reports, violence erupted in parts of Osun State on February 17, just days before the swearing-in ceremony, heightening fears of further disturbances.

Governor Adeleke, who has consistently voiced his commitment to peaceful governance, also reflected on the historical significance of the election, describing it as the final chapter of a lengthy journey. He reiterated that his administration’s transformation agenda would rely on the efforts of local government officials. “This is the culmination of the struggle our people have fought for, and it is now your turn to deliver. You are agents of change, tasked with bringing dividends of democracy to our people,” he said, addressing the crowd.

He also commended the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) for successfully organizing the election, while expressing gratitude to security agencies and state officials for their role in maintaining order throughout the electoral process. Adeleke further extended his appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for ensuring that Osun State did not descend into chaos in the wake of the political unrest.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank President Tinubu for his support during this period. His commitment to the rule of law has been instrumental in preserving peace,” Adeleke said.

During the ceremony, the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), Barrister Hashim Abioye, also delivered a speech. Abioye congratulated the new chairmen and vice-chairmen, and emphasized the importance of adhering to democratic principles and conducting themselves with integrity in service to the people.

“We have entrusted you with the responsibility of upholding democracy,” said Abioye. “Be true ambassadors of democracy, in both your conduct and service to the people of Osun State.”

Governor Makinde Weighs In on Recent Violence

The event was also graced by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who was present to congratulate the newly sworn-in officials. However, Makinde, who has been closely monitoring the situation in Osun State, expressed concern about the recent outbursts of violence, which culminated in an outbreak of chaos earlier this month.

The Oyo State governor, whose state is geographically close to Osun, had strong words for the new chairmen. “This is an opportunity for you to provide leadership at the grassroots level and deliver on your promises to the people,” Makinde said. “But don’t forget the violence that has recently marred this state. We must avoid the kind of lawlessness that has plagued our past. You must respect the law and avoid self-help tactics.”

Makinde further warned the new officials not to allow themselves to be drawn into conflicts, emphasizing that their positions were not to be seen as stepping stones for political ambition at the cost of public safety. “We don’t want to repeat the mistakes of the past, where violence disrupted governance and security,” he stated. “No matter the outcome of any court case, or the influence of political forces, this is not a time for lawlessness.”

Makinde’s statements point to the larger political struggle in the region, as local government elections often become highly charged, with various factions vying for control. The warning from the Oyo State Governor serves as a reminder of the volatile environment that can arise when local political dynamics are not carefully managed.

PDP Dominates Local Government Elections in Osun

The local government elections in Osun State had already raised eyebrows before the swearing-in ceremony, with the PDP securing a clean sweep of the local government chairmanship and councillorship positions. According to the OSSIEC, the PDP emerged victorious in all 332 councilorship seats as well as the 30 local government chairmanship positions in the state. The results were officially announced by OSSIEC on Saturday, following a peaceful conclusion of the election process.

Despite the PDP’s overwhelming success, the results have sparked criticism from opposition parties, who allege irregularities in the election. Some have raised concerns over the fairness of the voting process, while others question the legitimacy of the outcome. However, the OSSIEC has stood by its results, asserting that the election was free, fair, and credible.

As the newly elected chairmen prepare to settle into their roles, they will be under intense scrutiny, especially as the state government pushes forward with its ambitious development plans. In the face of such challenges, the directive from Governor Adeleke to steer clear of council secretariats for now may serve as a necessary safeguard to maintain peace in Osun State.

The Road Ahead

While the new chairmen have been cautioned to stay away from local government offices, the question remains whether such a measure will have the desired effect on long-term stability in Osun. Political analysts have warned that if the underlying issues of political rivalry and violence are not addressed, the situation could flare up again in the future.

In the meantime, the state government is expected to ramp up efforts to ensure that governance continues smoothly, with the local government officials expected to play an active role in advancing the state’s development agenda. However, with both internal and external pressures mounting, it remains to be seen whether the calm imposed by Adeleke’s directive will hold in the weeks and months to come.
