Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the death of an 80-year-old trader, identified as Ladan Bature, who was fatally stabbed during a violent altercation at the popular Kara Cattle Market along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The incident took place on Monday, in front of the mosque situated near the market. According to a statement from the Police Spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the elderly man was attacked by a suspect named Haiye Aginni after an argument. The dispute escalated quickly, leading to Aginni stabbing Bature with a knife, despite the presence of many market-goers and traders around the area.
Bature, a well-known trader in the market, was rushed to the hospital by concerned residents and fellow traders. Unfortunately, despite the desperate efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Speaking on the case, Police Spokesperson Omolola Odutola said: “The unfortunate incident occurred when an argument broke out between the deceased and the suspect. Despite being immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, the victim later died from the wound sustained in the attack.”
In the wake of the stabbing, the Ojodu Abiodun Police Division responded quickly to the scene. Detectives from the division launched an immediate investigation and were able to arrest the suspect, Haiye Aginni, for his involvement in the crime. Odutola confirmed that Aginni is currently in custody.
“The prompt action of the police led to the swift arrest of the suspect, and investigations are ongoing,” said Odutola. “The body of the deceased has been taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital morgue in Sagamu for preservation and an autopsy.”
The Kara Cattle Market, located along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, is one of the largest and busiest markets in Ogun State. It serves as a major hub for the trade of cattle, livestock, and various other goods. Traders from across the country, especially from northern Nigeria, frequent the market to buy and sell animals and other related products.
