A 56-year-old farmer, Oyinlola Jacob, has been arrested and arraigned before an Akure Magistrate Court in Ondo State for allegedly setting his brother’s farm, worth N20 million, ablaze. The tragic incident took place on January 29, 2025, at Odebei Farm in Ipogun, a rural area within the state.

The farm, owned by Ilemobayo Jacob, was a large agricultural venture that included cocoa, palm trees, plantains, and kolanut trees, all of which were destroyed in the fire. The total value of the farm has been estimated at N20 million, making it a significant loss for the family.

According to police reports, Oyinlola Jacob has been charged with one count of arson following the incident. When the charge was read to him in court, he pleaded not guilty to the allegations. The case has drawn attention due to the severity of the crime and the fact that the accused allegedly set fire to the family farm, which has left many questioning the motive behind the act.

Police prosecutor, Taiwo Oniyere, informed the court that three witnesses would be called to testify in the case. The prosecution requested time to review the case file and prepare for trial, highlighting that the evidence would be carefully examined to ensure a fair trial.

In his defense, Oyinlola Jacob’s counsel, O.A. Adanlawo, did not object to the prosecution’s request for time. However, Adanlawo appealed to the court to grant his client bail on lenient terms, assuring that his client would not abscond during the trial.
