Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has addressed growing speculations about his potential candidacy for the 2027 presidential election, asserting that he will announce his intentions when
the time is appropriate. Speaking during an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Makinde highlighted his commitment to fulfilling his current mandate and delivering on infrastructure, policies, and programs that enhance the lives of the people of Oyo State.
Makinde acknowledged his capacity to occupy the highest office in the land but clarified that his focus remains on his responsibilities as governor. He stated, “I have the capacity to occupy the highest position in the land, but I will put into consideration what the Nigerian people want, what my political party wants, and what would be in the best interest of the people.” He further expressed that if his political journey concludes with his tenure as governor, he would cherish the opportunity given to him by the people of Oyo State.
The governor highlighted his administration’s achievements in building road infrastructure and enhancing security across the state. He noted that these developments have been instrumental in promoting agribusiness success and economic expansion in Oyo State. Makinde referenced his recent trip to France, where he finalized an agreement with Rungis International to establish a Food Wholesale Market in Ijaiye. He described this project, along with the Special Agro-Processing Zones in Eruwa and Ijaiye, as significant outcomes of his administration’s agribusiness policy.
Addressing discussions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Makinde emphasized the importance of internal consultation before engaging in coalition talks. He cautioned against rushing into alliances without clear objectives and without involving all necessary party organs. Makinde stated, “These are the issues you need to put into consideration before jumping into the fray, saying you are leading a coalition without carrying the critical people in your party along.”
Regarding the upcoming 2027 governorship election in Oyo State, Makinde expressed confidence in the strength of his team and assured that he would not leave the state in a state of uncertainty. He revealed plans to prepare a “Roadmap for Continued Development of Oyo State,” which he intends to hand over to his successor, ensuring a seamless transition and continued progress for the state.
Makinde also touched upon the issue of zoning, acknowledging that political discussions are ongoing. He suggested that the governorship position would rotate out of Ibadan when a candidate who has demonstrated exceptional performance and earned the trust of the people decides to pursue it.
