The Obatala Agbaye-in-Council has officially annulled the “Obalefun Agbaye” title previously conferred upon Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, citing the act as fraudulent and a violation of traditional rites.
In an official statement dated April 20, 2025, His Divine Grace (HDG) Oba Isooro O.O.O Dada, the Arole Obatala Obalesun Obatala Agbaye and Oloja of Iranje-Idita, Ile-Ife, condemned the unauthorized conferment of the title by the group “Ijo Olorisa Parapo Agbaye,” based in Badagry, Lagos State. The Obatala Council emphasized that the title “Obalefun Agbaye” is exclusively within the jurisdiction of the Obalesun Obatala Agbaye-in-Council, under the leadership of the Oloja of Iranje-Idita Town, Ile-Ife.
The council’s statement described the conferral as a “desecration” and a “despicable act,” accusing the involved parties of fraud, illegal appointment, impersonation, and gross abuse of privileges. It further warned of potential legal actions, including criminal charges for conspiracy, fraudulent misrepresentation, and impersonation.
Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, a prominent Nigerian architect and politician, gained national attention during the 2023 Lagos State governorship election as the Labour Party’s candidate. Despite his efforts, the Court of Appeal upheld the victory of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, dismissing Rhodes-Vivour’s appeal as lacking merit.
The annulment of the Obalefun Agbaye title has sparked discussions about the authenticity and authority of traditional titles in Nigeria, highlighting the need for adherence to established customs and legal frameworks in the conferment of such honours.
As the Obatala Council takes steps to address this issue, it highlights the importance of respecting traditional institutions and processes in maintaining the integrity of cultural practices.
