A Lagos court has discharged and acquitted 17-year-old Quadri Alabi, who gained national attention during the 2023 presidential campaigns when he stood in front of Peter Obi’s convoy. Alabi had been in detention since January 2025, facing allegations of armed robbery.
Alabi became a symbol of youth activism during the 2023 elections when he stood in front of Peter Obi’s convoy in Lagos, capturing the attention of many Nigerians. However, his life took a drastic turn when he was arrested in January 2025.
According to Alabi, his troubles began when some individuals in his community demanded a share of the money he received after his viral moment. When his mother refused, they allegedly threatened to kidnap him. Later, while returning from work as a motor boy, Alabi was reportedly abducted by these individuals and handed over to the police.
He was accused of armed robbery and theft, charges he denied. Alabi claimed he was forced to carry faeces in prison due to his inability to pay for his release, describing his treatment as that of an orphan.
The case was brought before the Apapa Magistrate Court, where Alabi was charged alongside four adults. His lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, argued that the charges were fabricated by local thugs and that Alabi had been unjustly detained. Effiong called for an orderly room trial for the officers involved and demanded N100 million in compensation for Alabi.
On April 17, 2025, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) issued legal advice stating there was insufficient evidence to support the allegations against Alabi. Following this, Magistrate A.O. Olorunfemi discharged and acquitted him, citing the lack of substantial evidence.
Alabi’s release has sparked discussions about the treatment of minors in the Nigerian justice system. His lawyer criticized the police for their handling of the case, emphasizing the need for reforms to protect vulnerable individuals.
Since his release, Alabi has expressed a desire to pursue education and learn a trade. He hopes to rebuild his life and contribute positively to society. His case serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by young Nigerians and the importance of a fair and just legal system.
