HURIWA Slams Police Over Gombe Easter Attack

    Share

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has sharply criticized the Gombe State Police for labeling as an “accident” the deadly truck attack that killed five and injured 13 during an Easter procession in Billiri Local Government Area. The civil rights group alleges that the incident was a targeted act of terrorism against Christians.

On Easter Monday, a truck loaded with grains veered off the road and plowed into a group of Christian worshippers participating in a traditional Easter procession. The victims were en route to the Emir’s palace and the Government House for customary Easter homage. The Gombe State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that the driver lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the crash.

However, HURIWA disputes this account, describing the police’s conclusion as a “conspiracy of the highest order” and an attempt to downplay what they consider a deliberate attack. The group questions the absence of security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Nigeria Civil Defence Corps during the procession, suggesting negligence or complicity.

In a statement, HURIWA President Emmanuel Onwubiko expressed outrage over the police’s swift dismissal of the incident as an accident, emphasizing that the attackers’ intent was to disrupt a religious gathering. Onwubiko further criticized the federal government for allegedly treating certain ethnic minorities, particularly in the North, as less significant.

The group also drew parallels to similar incidents in Europe, where terrorists have used vehicles to target large gatherings, and called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the Gombe attack.
