Lagos E-Hailing Drivers Plan May Day Protest

    Share

App-based transport workers in Lagos are planning a 24-hour protest on May 1, 2025, to demand better working conditions, fair pay, and improved safety measures from ride-hailing companies such as Uber, Bolt, inDrive, and Rida. The protest is organized by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), Lagos State Chapter.

According to Steven Iwindoye, the union’s Public Relations Officer, the protest is in response to several grievances:

    – Low Earnings: Drivers claim that fare reductions by companies like Bolt have significantly decreased their income, making it difficult to cover operational costs.

    – Unjust Deactivations: Drivers allege that they are frequently deactivated from the platforms without clear reasons or the opportunity to appeal.

    – Safety Concerns: There are reports of increasing attacks on drivers by passengers, leading to calls for better security measures.

    – High Commission Fees: Drivers argue that the commission fees charged by these companies are excessive and not reflective of the services provided.

    – Mandatory Facial Recognition: The union opposes the implementation of mandatory facial recognition systems, citing privacy concerns.

Iwindoye emphasized that the protest is a collective effort to address these issues. He urged all drivers, regardless of union affiliation, to participate in the protest to show unity and strength. The union plans to stay off the apps for 24 hours, effectively halting services to send a clear message to the companies.

AUATON has previously engaged in discussions with ride-hailing companies and government officials to address these concerns. However, Iwindoye claims that these efforts have been unsuccessful, leading to the decision to organize the protest. He stated, “We have tried dialogue, and it has not worked; these companies only understand one language: the language of economic pressure.”

The union is seeking support from various stakeholders, including labor organizations, civil society groups, and the general public. They aim to raise awareness about the challenges faced by app-based transport workers and advocate for fair treatment and improved working conditions.

As the protest date approaches, AUATON is preparing to mobilize its members and coordinate activities to ensure a peaceful and effective demonstration. The union hopes that the protest will lead to meaningful discussions and positive changes in the industry.

The outcome of this protest could have significant implications for the future of app-based transport services in Lagos and across Nigeria.
