A police corporal in Malaysia has lost part of his ear after he was bitten by a Nigerian national while attending to a distress call in the early hours of Friday. The bizarre incident occurred at a private clinic in the Metro Prima area of Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, and has left both the officer and the public shocked.
According to reports from Malaysian news outlets, the incident took place around 10:03 a.m. when a police team, including the corporal, was called to a private clinic where a Nigerian man was reportedly causing a disturbance. The man, later identified as a 38-year-old student at a private college, had been acting aggressively, prompting the clinic staff to contact the authorities.
Kuala Lumpur police chief, Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, provided details of the incident, stating that the officers tried to calm the man down after arriving at the scene. Despite the man seeming to calm down initially, he suddenly became aggressive once again. The officers, after several attempts, managed to escort him to a patrol car.
However, just as the suspect was about to be placed inside the vehicle, he unexpectedly turned around and bit the police corporal’s left ear. The bite was so severe that it severed part of the officer’s ear. The police chief confirmed that the attack was unprovoked, and the corporal was injured during the struggle to restrain the suspect.
“The 10:03 a.m. incident occurred when the corporal and his colleague arrived and tried to calm the foreigner down,” said Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa. “After several attempts, the suspect, who seemed to have calmed down, was ushered into the patrol car. When he got to the car door and was about to be placed inside the vehicle, he suddenly turned and bit the corporal’s left ear, severing it.”
The victim, identified only as the corporal, was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to authorities, the officer’s condition is stable, and he is expected to undergo surgery to reattach the severed part of his ear. Despite the severity of the injury, the officer is expected to recover.
The suspect, whose identity has been revealed as a Nigerian student, was detained by the police immediately after the attack. He is currently in custody while investigations into the incident continue. The police have not yet disclosed further details about his background or why he had been causing a disturbance at the clinic.
Authorities have confirmed that initial investigations have shown the 38-year-old is enrolled at a private college in Malaysia, although there are no further details about his personal life or the reasons behind his aggressive behaviour.
The shocking attack has raised concerns over the safety of law enforcement officers while dealing with aggressive individuals, particularly during routine arrest procedures. The incident also highlights the growing challenges faced by police officers in handling unruly suspects in public spaces.
While the police chief has promised a thorough investigation, the incident has also sparked discussions about how police officers are trained to handle confrontational situations, as well as the need for more effective safety protocols for both officers and the public.
The attack on the policeman’s ear comes amid ongoing concerns about the safety of police officers in various countries. In Malaysia, the public has expressed concern over the increasing frequency of violent confrontations between law enforcement and suspects, especially in cases involving foreign nationals.
The police force in Kuala Lumpur has vowed to take appropriate legal action against the Nigerian man. Authorities are also continuing to monitor the health condition of the injured corporal, who is expected to be off-duty for some time due to his injury.
