In a disturbing incident on Good Friday, April 18, 2025, suspected sea pirates abducted 20 passengers traveling along the Akwa Ibom–Cross River waterways. The victims had boarded an Akwa-Cross Transport Company boat from Oron in Akwa Ibom State, heading to Calabar, Cross River State. Midway through the journey, the vessel was hijacked by armed pirates who diverted it to an undisclosed location.
Among the kidnapped were relatives of staff from the Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation (AKBC) Television Service and the Advocate Broadcasting Network (ABDN). Notably, popular comedian General Odey was also among the victims. Most passengers were traders, while a few were holidaymakers.
The wife of one of the abducted passengers, who requested anonymity, reported that the kidnappers had contacted her and demanded a ransom of ₦100 million. However, it remains unclear whether this amount pertains to her husband alone or all 20 victims.
Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, confirmed that the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Cross River State Police Command. He stated, “I would not know if any of the victims have been rescued because the matter is being investigated by the Cross River State Police Command. The incident did not occur on the Akwa Ibom waterways. However, we are collaborating closely to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended.”
This abduction highlights the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s waterways, where piracy and kidnapping for ransom have become prevalent. Authorities have intensified efforts to combat these crimes, but incidents like this highlight the need for enhanced security measures and vigilance.
As investigations continue, families of the victims remain hopeful for their safe return, while the broader community calls for stronger actions to safeguard travellers on Nigeria’s waterways.
