The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast warning of thunderstorms and haziness across the country from Sunday to Tuesday. This comes as part of the agency’s efforts to keep Nigerians informed about changing weather conditions and the potential impact on daily activities.
In a statement released on Saturday from Abuja, NiMet warned that moderate dust haze is expected to affect states in the northern region, including Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, Kano, Yobe, and Jigawa. The agency also predicted isolated thunderstorms in parts of Adamawa and Taraba States throughout the forecast period.
The North-central region is not left out, with NiMet forecasting partly cloudy skies in the morning, followed by isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Areas affected include the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Benue States.
Southern Nigeria will also experience thunderstorms, particularly in Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom states. The thunderstorms are expected to occur both in the morning and later in the day, spreading across various states.
NiMet’s forecast for Monday predicts sunny skies across the northern states, but also morning thunderstorms in parts of Taraba and Adamawa states, with thunderstorms extending to Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe states later in the day. The North-central region will see similar weather patterns, with thunderstorms expected over Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue states in the morning, and a continuation in the afternoon and evening.
On Tuesday, NiMet expects sunny skies in the northern region, with patches of clouds. Morning thunderstorms will affect Adamawa and Taraba, and later in the day, thunderstorms will extend to Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba states. The North-central region will experience partly cloudy skies in the morning, with thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Niger states.
In the southern part of the country, morning thunderstorms are expected in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Bayelsa states, with thunderstorms spreading to other states later in the day.
NiMet has urged the public to take necessary precautions, particularly in regions experiencing thunderstorms, as strong winds could precede the rain. Additionally, the agency warned that dust particles may be suspended in the air in the northern states, advising residents to take caution.
For travelers, NiMet encouraged airline operators to obtain updated airport-specific weather reports to ensure safe flight planning. Residents across the country are also urged to stay informed about the latest weather developments through NiMet’s official website at [www.nimet.gov.ng](http://www.nimet.gov.ng).
