7 Nigerians Attacked, One Kidnapped in South Africa

    Share

Seven Nigerians were brutally attacked in Springs, Gauteng Province, South Africa, on Thursday, with one, Ani Silas, beaten unconscious and abducted from his workplace. The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) condemned the incident, which involved Silas being forcibly taken by a member of staff from a television station, along with their media team, private security, and members of the South African Police Services (SAPS).

Witnesses to the attack reported seeing South African police officers standing by while the assault and kidnapping took place, prompting serious concerns about the law enforcement’s role. Video evidence has emerged showing the officers failing to intervene, raising questions about their involvement or complicity in the crime.

Despite ongoing searches across Gauteng Province, Silas remains missing. A formal kidnapping case has been registered at the Springs police station, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has taken over the case. NUSA has demanded the immediate release of Silas and accountability for those responsible for the attack, including the SAPS officers who were present.

The Nigerian Union has called on South African authorities to ensure the safety of foreign nationals in the country, demanding full investigations and urgent action to prevent further violent attacks. They are also in contact with the Nigerian government, human rights organizations, and the African Union to address the issue.
