The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported 169 deaths from Lassa fever, Mpox, and cholera in 2025. According to NCDC Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, there have been 832 confirmed cases of Lassa fever and Mpox combined, alongside 1,307 suspected cholera cases.

In a national health briefing held in Abuja on Friday, Dr. Idris emphasized the agency’s ongoing efforts to monitor and control infectious diseases through collaboration with State Health Ministries and development partners. He revealed that Lassa fever had claimed 132 lives out of 696 confirmed cases, with a fatality rate of 19%.

Mpox cases have also been a concern, with 136 confirmed cases across 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory, and three deaths reported. Dr. Idris stated that the disease continues to spread, especially in southern and central regions of the country, affecting various professionals and community members.

Cholera, primarily affecting areas with poor sanitation, has caused 34 deaths from 1,307 suspected cases. Dr. Idris warned that the risk of cholera could increase as the rainy season approaches.

In response to the outbreaks, the NCDC has ramped up surveillance and response strategies, including the deployment of National Rapid Response Teams, training healthcare workers, and enhancing laboratory capacities for Mpox testing. Dr. Idris urged Nigerians to prioritize hygiene and sanitation, as well as report any suspected cases promptly.
