The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government under Governor Monday Okpebholo of using the fight against criminality as a tool to harass and intimidate opposition members in the state.
Speaking at a press conference in Benin City on Friday, the Chairman of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, said while the party supports genuine efforts to end insecurity, the current administration has politicised the process.
“We are concerned that the APC government is using the fight against crime to silence PDP members. This is dangerous for democracy,” Aziegbemi said.
He cited recent actions such as the sealing of a hotel owned by Hon. Matthew Iduoriyemkewen and threats to demolish the home of another PDP chieftain, Francis Inegbeneki, as examples of what he called political witch-hunting.
Aziegbemi warned that such actions create fear, discourage investment, and damage the government’s credibility. “If opposition members cannot safely run businesses in the state, how do you expect others to invest?” he asked.
He also criticized the recent N5,000 increase in the minimum wage announced by Governor Okpebholo during the May Day celebration, describing it as “insulting” and “a mockery” of civil servants.
“Raising salaries by just N5,000 in today’s economy shows complete disregard for workers,” Aziegbemi said, comparing it unfavourably to the previous wage increases under Governor Obaseki.
The PDP warned that Edo State is being taken backward and urged the government to “match the brakes” and focus on inclusive governance rather than suppressing opposition voices.
