In a significant move to safeguard national security, British counter-terrorism police have arrested eight men, including seven Iranian nationals, in two separate operations across England. These arrests are part of ongoing investigations into suspected terrorist plots and potential threats linked to foreign state activities.

On Saturday, May 3, 2025, five men were apprehended in a series of coordinated raids in Swindon, west London, Stockport, Rochdale, and Manchester. The suspects, aged between 29 and 46, are under investigation for allegedly preparing a terrorist act targeting a specific, undisclosed location. Four of the arrested individuals are confirmed to be Iranian nationals, while the nationality of the fifth is still being determined.

The arrests were carried out under the UK’s Terrorism Act, with the fifth suspect detained under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act. All five men remain in custody as authorities continue their inquiries.

In a separate and unrelated operation, three more Iranian men, aged 39, 44, and 55, were arrested in northwest and west London. These individuals were detained under the National Security Act 2023, which addresses threats posed by foreign powers. The arrests mark the first under this legislation concerning Iranian nationals.

Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, stated that both investigations are in their early stages. Authorities are exploring various lines of inquiry to determine the suspects’ motivations and assess any further risks to the public. Police have been in contact with the affected site of the suspected plot, providing advice and support while maintaining operational confidentiality.
