British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua has revealed he will undergo elbow surgery this May as he plans a return to the ring.
The 35-year-old former two-time world heavyweight champion made the announcement during an interview with sports broadcaster Dazn. He said the surgery is minor but will keep him out of training for about six to eight weeks.
“I’ve got to have a little surgery on my elbow, sometime in May,” Joshua said. “That will see me out of the gym for maybe six to eight weeks and then, as soon as I’m healed, I’ll be back.”
Joshua has not fought since he was knocked out in the fifth round by fellow Briton Daniel Dubois at Wembley in September 2024—a defeat that shocked many fans and raised questions about his future in the sport.
Despite the setback, Joshua remains focused on recovering fully before returning to action. He was recently spotted ringside in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, watching Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez defeat William Scull on points.
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has not ruled out a potential blockbuster fight between Joshua and Tyson Fury, another two-time world champion. Hearn said that even though Fury has claimed retirement, a simple message on social media could reignite the matchup.
Anthony Joshua rose to fame after winning Olympic gold at London 2012. He claimed his first world title in 2016 and later unified the WBA, IBF, and WBO belts in 2018. He lost the titles to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021 and has been working to rebuild ever since.
Fans across Nigeria and the world continue to watch closely, hoping to see AJ return stronger and possibly reclaim his place at the top of world boxing.
