Tensions flared again in Taraba State as a violent clash between farmers and herders in Bandawa village, Karim Lamido Local Government Area, claimed two lives and left several others injured.
The violence began on Saturday, May 11, when 34-year-old Buhari Malam was attacked with a machete on his farm by suspected Fulani herders. He was taken to the Primary Health Care Centre (PHCC) in Bandawa but died during treatment.
The killing sparked a reprisal attack by angry youths in the village, who reportedly killed five cows and injured seven others belonging to the herders.
Just a day later, on Sunday, May 12, the crisis worsened. At about 10:10 a.m., another farmer, Ishaku Tunde, was attacked on his farm and suffered multiple machete wounds. He is currently receiving treatment at the local PHCC.
Later that same day, at around 12:30 p.m., a traveller identified as Dauda Bawa was also attacked while on the road between Bandawa and Karim Lamido. He sustained deep neck injuries and was confirmed dead on arrival at the health centre.
In a related development, a Fulani community leader, Ardo Baka, reported that six herders have been missing since the violence broke out.
Security forces, including the military, police, local vigilantes, and hunters, have since been deployed to restore calm. Authorities say intensive patrols and surveillance are ongoing.
Peace talks are currently being held with local community leaders to prevent further escalation.
Security agencies have urged residents to remain calm, assuring that the situation is now under control.
