The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of five Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The confirmation took place during plenary on Wednesday, following the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on INEC, chaired by Senator Simon Lalong (APC, Plateau).
The confirmed nominees are Umar Garba (Kano), Sa’ad Idris (Bauchi), Chukwemeka Ibeziako (Anambra), Umar Mukhtar (Borno), and Dr. Johnson Sinkiem (Bayelsa).
Presenting the report, Senator Lalong stated that the committee thoroughly reviewed the resumes, qualifications, and professional backgrounds of the nominees. He noted that each of them was found competent and suitable for the position.
“After carefully scrutinising all the relevant documents and evaluating their qualifications, experience, integrity, and performance during the screening, the committee recommends that the Senate confirm the nominees,” Lalong said.
The confirmation is part of efforts to strengthen INEC’s operations and ensure proper preparation for upcoming elections across the country.
