The Lagos State Government has announced that it will begin full enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics starting July 1, 2025, as part of its ongoing push for environmental sustainability.
The announcement was made on Friday via a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
This move follows earlier discussions held in February 2025 between the state government and stakeholders, including members of the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA), who are expected to be directly impacted by the ban.
Wahab acknowledged that while enforcing the ban may affect businesses within the sector, the decision is necessary for the greater good of the environment. He added that more consultations would be held before the full enforcement date to finalize the modalities and ensure a smooth transition.
“Unlike styrofoam, single-use plastic is more complicated. But we are committed to doing what is right for a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos,” Wahab said.
Interestingly, members of the FBRA reportedly expressed support for the policy, stating that they need the ban even more than the government does, as it aligns with their long-term environmental and corporate responsibility goals.
The upcoming ban targets commonly used disposable plastics such as plastic bags, straws, cutlery, and packaging materials that contribute to widespread pollution, especially in drainage systems, water bodies, and public spaces.
This is part of Lagos State’s broader effort to reduce environmental pollution, encourage recycling, and build a more eco-friendly waste management system in Nigeria’s most populous city.
