Foreign Terror Threat Growing – Defence Chief

    Share

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has raised the alarm over rising terrorist threats spilling into Nigeria from neighboring countries. He said the Nigerian military is taking urgent steps to stop the growing insecurity.

General Musa spoke to journalists on Friday after a high-level security meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Also present at the closed-door meeting were the National Security Adviser, heads of the DSS, Police, and other top security officers.

“The president is very concerned about what is happening,” Musa said. “We have reassured him that we are on top of the situation. We are working extremely hard.”

According to him, Nigeria is now feeling the impact of increased terrorist activities in the wider Sahel region, especially due to weak border control.

“There is a global push by terrorists and jihadists across the Sahel. That pressure is now coming into Nigeria,” he warned.

To tackle the threat, President Tinubu has approved the purchase of more military equipment, including air support, to strengthen security operations in affected regions.

Musa also noted that the fight against insecurity will not be won by weapons alone. He emphasized the need for community support, better governance, and cooperation at all levels of government.

“This fight isn’t just about bullets. Communities must feel the presence of government and development,” he said.

He stressed that all security agencies — the military, police, and intelligence services — are now working as one team to secure the country.

Responding to fears raised by governors, especially from Borno and Plateau states, the Defence Chief said close cooperation with local leaders is key.

“We know we cannot do it alone. That’s why we are working with governors and communities,” he added, citing a recent trip to Maiduguri alongside ministers and other service chiefs.

The Defence Chief assured Nigerians that peace will return, and the government is fully committed to protecting lives and property.
