    Edo Deputy Speaker Steps Down Over PDP Minority, APC’s Atu Takes Over

    The Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Maria Oligbi-Edeko (PDP – Esan North East II), has resigned from her position, citing the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) minority status in the House.

    Oligbi-Edeko, who was elected Deputy Speaker on June 16, 2023, voluntarily stepped down to promote fairness and equity among all constituencies, according to her resignation speech delivered during plenary.

    “I am stepping aside to allow for justice, fairness and equity for all,” she said while expressing gratitude to her party for the opportunity to serve.

    Fellow lawmakers paid glowing tributes to her leadership style, describing her as a woman of integrity and dedication who made a significant impact during her time in office.

    Following her resignation, Hon. Osamwonyi Atu (APC – Orhionmwon East) was unanimously elected as the new Deputy Speaker.

    In a show of respect, the Majority Leader, Hon. Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC – Esan West), moved that all entitlements due to the office of Deputy Speaker be granted to Oligbi-Edeko. The motion was seconded by Minority Leader, Hon. Charity Airobarueghian (PDP – Ovia North East I), and unanimously adopted by the House.

    The change in leadership reflects the current political composition of the House, where the APC now holds the majority.
