The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has awarded Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) its prestigious Corporate Merit Award, recognizing the college as the leading producer of certified and chartered accountants in Nigeria.
According to a statement by Mr. Adekunle Adams, Head of Public Relations at Yabatech, the award was presented during ICAN’s 2025 Awards and Dinner Night held on Saturday in Lekki, Lagos State.
Adams noted that Yabatech holds a special place in ICAN’s history, being the venue where the institute conducted its first professional examination. Over the years, many Yabatech graduates have consistently qualified as chartered accountants, making the institution a key contributor to the profession.
Receiving the award on behalf of the college, Yabatech Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, expressed gratitude to ICAN for the recognition. He described the award as humbling and promised that the institution would continue to strive for excellence in training professional accountants.
“I appreciate the body for organising this event to celebrate members, associates, and institutions who have made outstanding contributions to the accounting field,” Abdul said.
ICAN President Mr. Davidson Alaribe, who presented the award, praised Yabatech’s dedication to producing top-tier accounting professionals. Alaribe, who is also a proud alumnus of Yabatech, said the award was meant to encourage the college to continue its impactful work.
The event was graced by notable personalities including Oba George Majekodunmi Okufi, the Alara of Ilara, who was Yabatech’s first indigenous Rector and ICAN’s first Registrar and CEO. Other award recipients included Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State and Prof. Ademola Tayo, President and Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University.
The award further cements Yabatech’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s top institutions for accounting education.
