The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a group in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, allegedly distributing fake and unregistered drugs to unsuspecting members of the public under the guise of evangelism.
At a press briefing on Monday, Mr. Chukwuma Oligbu, NAFDAC’s South-South Zonal Director, said the group was caught during an operation at Abuloma Community Town Hall. A member of the group was arrested while administering one of the fake drugs to a member of the public.
The group, led by an individual identified as Evangelist Jenkins, was found distributing products such as “Supernatural Water,” “Cleanser,” and “Eye Drop,” all bearing no NAFDAC registration, ingredient lists, manufacturer information, or expiry dates.
“These people were claiming to treat serious medical conditions like cancer, fibroids, arthritis, glaucoma, and cataracts,” Oligbu said. “They charge people up to ₦5,000 per drug under the pretence of free medical treatment.”
He also revealed that some users of the eye drops had reported swollen eyes, which the group falsely claimed was a sign the drug was working.
Oligbu assured that the seized products would be subjected to proper laboratory analysis, and the agency would ensure the perpetrators face justice. He warned the public to avoid buying drugs from unauthorised sources, especially those disguised as religious or charity missions.
He urged Nigerians to verify the registration status of drugs and report suspicious activities through NAFDAC’s toll-free lines: 09097630507 and 09097630508.
“We are committed to ridding Rivers State and Nigeria of fake drugs. We call on the public to assist us with reliable information,” he added.
