Tension has gripped Ubuneke-Ivbiaro, a community in Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, following a brutal attack that left one woman dead and her husband abducted by gunmen.
The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, when the assailants stormed the residence of Mr. Arimazoya Abona. According to local sources, the gunmen shot his wife in the neck before kidnapping Mr. Abona, who is believed to be in his 70s, and taking him into the nearby bush.
Neighbours, who were drawn by the sound of gunshots, arrived at the scene to find Mrs. Abona lying lifeless in front of the house, covered in blood. Efforts by local youths to pursue the kidnappers into the forest were unsuccessful.
Security agencies, including the police from the Afuze Divisional Headquarters and the Nigerian Army, quickly responded to the scene. The woman’s body has been deposited at the morgue for further examination.
Shortly after the attack, the kidnappers contacted the family, demanding a ransom of N100 million for the release of Mr. Abona. The police have arrested two suspects in connection with the crime, and investigations are ongoing.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community, highlighting the growing security concerns in rural Edo State, where incidents of kidnapping and violent crime have increased in recent months.
