Lagos Govt Exempts PET Bottles, Sachet Water from Plastic Ban

    Share

The Lagos State Government has clarified that its upcoming ban on Single Use Plastics (SUPs) will not include PET bottles and sachet water.

The clarification was made by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement on Tuesday. Wahab explained that the ban, which will come into effect on July 1, 2024, targets specific plastic items, and PET bottles as well as sachet water are exempt from this ban.

Wahab noted that nylon carrier bags thicker than 40 microns are also excluded. He addressed growing confusion, explaining that only certain single-use plastics, such as styrofoam food containers, polystyrene cups, plastic straws, plastic cutlery, and lightweight plastic bags, will be banned.

The government has also set up a Plastic Waste Management Fund to address plastic waste challenges, with contributions from producers and importers. The fund will be jointly managed to improve waste management in the state.

The Lagos State Government remains committed to enforcing the ban on July 1, following an 18-month grace period since the initial announcement of the ban in January 2024.
