Members of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) Law Class of 2011 are calling for an urgent investigation into the killing of their classmate and fellow legal practitioner, Mr. Ifeanyi Iloakasia, who was allegedly murdered in Anambra State on May 15.

In a statement released in Abuja on Thursday, the group’s chairman, Mr. Chinedu Obasi, described the death as “cold-blooded” and demanded swift action from the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies.

“We are outraged and devastated by the brutal death of our beloved classmate and colleague, Barrister Ifeanyi Rolex Iloakasia,” Obasi stated. “He was a brilliant lawyer, a devoted husband and father, and a respected figure in his community.”

According to reports, Iloakasia was ambushed and shot along with his client at Egbebelu village, Nanka in Orumba North Local Government Area, shortly after securing the bail of an accused person at the High Court sitting in Ekwulobia, Aguata LGA.

Police authorities in Anambra confirmed the incident. The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the lawyer and his client were attacked at about 11:30 a.m. while returning from court. Another victim, who was seriously injured, is currently receiving treatment.

Obasi said the murder was not just a personal loss but a direct attack on the legal profession and the justice system in Nigeria.

“We may not yet know the motive behind this barbaric act, but we demand justice—swift, thorough, and uncompromising,” he declared.

He urged the police to intensify and broaden their investigation, stressing that silence or inaction would send a dangerous message to criminals and erode public confidence in the justice system.

“This kind of assassination is disgraceful and must not be swept under the carpet,” Obasi added. “We send our heartfelt condolences to Iloakasia’s wife, children, and family. The NAU Law Class of 2011 stands united in grief and in our call for justice.”

The killing has sparked outrage within the legal community, with many lawyers now questioning the safety of practitioners handling sensitive or controversial cases.

As investigations continue, calls are growing louder for the police to act quickly and bring those responsible to book.
