Pastor Adefarasin Denies Gun Allegation in Viral Video

    Share

Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church, Paul Adefarasin, has responded to a viral video circulating on social media, firmly denying claims that he was seen holding or pointing a firearm at a passerby while in traffic.

The incident sparked wide conversation on social media earlier in the week after a short clip surfaced online. In the video, Pastor Adefarasin is seen engaging with someone believed to be a passerby who was recording him through a car window. An object is visible in the pastor’s hand, leading to speculation from some viewers that it might have been a gun.

However, the respected Lagos-based preacher has swiftly addressed the controversy. Taking to his official account on X (formerly Twitter), Adefarasin clarified the situation, stating that the item he was holding was not a firearm.

“You might be aware of a video which has been circulating on social media showing me in what some have misunderstood as brandishing a firearm. I want to assure you of this — that was certainly not a firearm, and at no point did I point such at anyone,” he said.

He went further to acknowledge the concern the footage might have caused and warned the public against jumping to conclusions based on incomplete or misleading information.

“We understand the concern that this accusation may have caused, and we will speak briefly to this mischief during the 9:00 a.m. service tomorrow. Thank you for your patience and understanding,” he added.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the video was recorded during a traffic stop, where the pastor was recognised by another driver. When Pastor Adefarasin wound down his window and held up an object, it sparked confusion among onlookers, with some interpreting the gesture as threatening.

In another post addressing his followers, the pastor wrote warmly, “Dear Family, trusting that this meets you well, winning and on top of the tests of life,” before reiterating that he did not carry or point any weapon.

He also used the opportunity to invite the public to his Sunday service, where he said the matter would be touched upon again for the sake of clarity.

Adefarasin is a prominent voice in Nigeria’s Christian community, known for his calm approach to social and political matters. He oversees all branches of the House on the Rock Church, which has a large congregation both in Lagos and internationally.

Following his public explanation, many supporters have taken to social media to defend him, urging Nigerians to always seek facts before spreading unverified stories. Some noted that the speed with which misinformation spreads online can cause unnecessary fear or damage reputations.

“It’s good he responded quickly. The internet doesn’t wait, and people believe what they see without asking questions,” said one X user.

While the debate continues in some corners of the internet, others have praised the pastor for maintaining transparency and showing leadership in the face of controversy.

The story serves as another reminder of the power — and risk — of social media in shaping public opinion. In this case, Pastor Adefarasin has urged everyone to remain calm, stay informed, and not fall for sensational headlines.

The incident is expected to be addressed again briefly during his church’s Sunday service.
