Political Realignment Signs as Wike, Allies Meet Tinubu

    Share

President Bola Tinubu held a meeting on Saturday evening with some former governors from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), signaling possible shifts in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

The meeting took place at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa and was led by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, a former governor of Rivers State. Wike was joined by other notable ex-PDP governors, including Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti State), Samuel Ortom (Benue State), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia State).

These governors were part of the “G5,” a group that broke away from the PDP during the 2023 election cycle. They had opposed the PDP’s presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and instead supported Bola Tinubu, who eventually won the presidency.

Following the elections, Tinubu appointed Wike as Minister of the FCT in August 2023, a move seen as a reward for his support.

Details of the discussions during Saturday’s meeting were not made public. However, political observers view this as an early sign of realignment and cooperation between some former PDP leaders and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of future elections.
