The Niger State Government has revealed that more than 700 persons are still missing following the recent devastating flood in Mokwa community, Mokwa Local Government Area.
Governor Umaru Bago made this known on Tuesday during a condolence visit from former Chief Security Officer to late Gen. Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (rtd), and his delegation. The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Yakubu Garba, described the situation as a national disaster.
According to him, 207 people have been confirmed dead, while over 3,000 households have been displaced by the flood. He added that 400 houses were damaged, with 283 completely destroyed along with 50 shops.
“We are still searching for over 700 people who have not been accounted for. The flooding has caused serious destruction in Mokwa and surrounding areas,” Bago said.
He thanked Nigerians and corporate bodies for their donations and support, and stated that the government is working with experts to understand the root cause of the flooding. Assessment results are expected soon.
In his remarks, Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha said his visit, along with other influential Nigerians, was to sympathise with the government and people of Niger State over the tragic incident.
“We are here to express our condolences over the terrible losses. We will also meet with traditional leaders in Mokwa to discuss preventive measures for the future,” he said.
Al-Mustapha stressed the importance of improved town planning and disaster preparedness to prevent a recurrence of such tragedies. His delegation had earlier visited former Military President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) in Minna.
