The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has awarded foreign postgraduate scholarships to 200 successful candidates for its 2025 scholarship programme. The announcement was made by the Commission’s Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, who emphasized that the selection process was free from political interference and focused on merit.
Dr. Ogbuku praised the panel responsible for screening the candidates, saying they worked hard to ensure the best students were chosen. He also highlighted the success of last year’s beneficiaries, noting that one recipient achieved the best results in their programme, a sign of the high quality of the selection process.
He hinted that, based on the excellent performance of past scholars, the NDDC might resume awarding scholarships for doctoral studies soon. The scholarship programme aims to improve opportunities for young people in the Niger Delta by exposing them to international experiences and development.
Dr. Ogbuku also warned beneficiaries to avoid criminal activities or behaviors that could damage the reputation of the Commission and Nigeria.
Chief Godson Idozo, the programme consultant, revealed that over 30,000 people applied for the scholarships this year. Out of these, 6,000 candidates were shortlisted for an aptitude test, and 200 made it to the final merit list.
Dr. George Uzonwanne, NDDC Director of Education, Health, and Social Services, congratulated the beneficiaries and encouraged them to stay focused on their academic goals.
The NDDC Chairman, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, alongside the Managing Director, formally handed over award letters to the successful candidates in a ceremony.
