The Imo Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully rehabilitated 33 drug users between July 2024 and June 2025. This was disclosed by the NDLEA Commander in Imo, Mr. Ibrahim Ohida, during a press briefing in Owerri on Thursday. The briefing was part of activities marking the 2025 United Nations Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking.
Ohida revealed that 38 drug users were counseled by the command within the period under review. The agency also arrested 246 suspects and seized over 631 kilograms of hard drugs, including cannabis sativa, methamphetamine, tramadol, and others.
“In line with our mandate, we prosecuted 49 cases in court and secured 19 convictions,” the Commander said.
He expressed gratitude to Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, wife of Governor Hope Uzodimma, for renovating the NDLEA’s rehabilitation facility and urged the government to provide more support, especially operational vehicles.
Representing the governor, Chief Ezechukwu Obonna, Special Adviser on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, announced the state government’s donation of Hilux vans to the NDLEA to aid its operations.
Commander Ohida called on all stakeholders to join hands in fighting drug abuse and trafficking in the state. He warned drug users and traffickers to stop their activities, stressing that the negative consequences of drug abuse are avoidable and a drug-free society is achievable.
The week-long event will include a quiz competition for students, a road walk with sister security agencies, Jumaat prayers, a church service, and will conclude with a grand finale on June 26.
