The Mayor of Haifa, Yona Yahav, has called for urgent peace talks between Iran and Israel after fresh missile strikes hit the Israeli city on Friday. The mayor said waiting two weeks for any negotiations, as suggested by former U.S. President Donald Trump, is “too much time” given the level of destruction already suffered.
Speaking to CNN’s Nic Robertson from the scene of the latest attack, Mayor Yahav pleaded with both Iran and Israel to immediately come to the negotiating table and agree on a peace deal before more lives and property are lost.
“Two weeks is too long. We need peace now. The city is burning,” Yahav said, visibly distressed by the damage caused by the Iranian missile strikes.
Haifa, one of Israel’s major cities, has come under repeated attacks since tensions escalated in the region. The ongoing conflict has raised global concerns and sparked fresh calls for de-escalation.
President Trump, in a recent statement, had suggested giving both countries a two-week window to reach a deal. But with cities like Haifa under fire, many, including the mayor, feel that timeline is not fast enough to save lives.
