The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied claims that it extended the service year of Rita Uguamaye, a Lagos corper known as Raye, because she criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Raye became popular online after posting a video on her TikTok account, @talktoraye, where she spoke about Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions. She described the high inflation and hardship faced by many Nigerians and called President Tinubu a “terrible leader.” She also criticised Lagos State, calling it a “smelling state” with poor living conditions.
Following the video, Raye claimed that some NYSC officials pressured her to delete the post. However, the NYSC did not comment on these allegations.
The controversy drew the attention of prominent figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore. Sowore condemned the alleged threats and said he would protest at the NYSC passing out parade if Raye’s service was not allowed to end peacefully.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Carol Embu, acting NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, said that service extensions are only decided at the end of the service year and must follow official guidelines.
She questioned the source of the claims, saying, “Who is Sowore? Does he work with the NYSC? How can an extension be given if she is still serving?”
The NYSC denied any punitive action against Raye. Our reporter could not independently confirm the claim that her service year had been extended, and Raye herself has not posted any update on the matter.
The NYSC assured the public it operates within the law and urged patience until the corper completes her service.
