Trump Backtracks on ‘Regime Change’ in Iran, Calls for Calm

    Share

U.S. President Donald Trump has softened his stance on Iran, saying he does not want to see regime change in the country. This statement came just two days after he hinted at the idea on social media.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to a NATO summit, Trump said, “I don’t want it. I’d like to see everything calm down as quickly as possible.” He also praised the Iranian people, calling them “very good traders” with a lot of oil and said they “should be able to rebuild and do a good job.”

Trump’s shift was highlighted by Charlie Kirk, a MAGA media personality, who called him “the peace president” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

However, the issue revealed divisions within the Republican Party. Senator Lindsey Graham, a strong critic of Iran and an ally of Trump, said during a hearing that “the only way you’re really going to have peace is for the regime to change its behavior, either through personnel or ideology.”

The contrasting views underline the ongoing debate in the U.S. over how to handle relations with Iran amid regional tensions.
