Nigeria has taken a big step toward greener shipping with the arrival of the Kota Oasis, the first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container ship to dock in West Africa. The vessel berthed at the Onne Multipurpose Terminal (OMT) on Friday, marking a historic moment for the country’s maritime industry.
The Kota Oasis is a Singaporean-flagged ship owned by Pacific International Lines (PIL). It is equipped with dual-fuel technology, allowing it to run on both LNG and diesel, reducing harmful emissions. The ship also features advanced exhaust gas recycling systems to cut methane output and improve fuel efficiency.
At 260 meters long and with a capacity of 8,350 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the *Kota Oasis* is one of the most modern and eco-friendly container ships in the world. It boasts a powerful 40,000-horsepower engine and is part of PIL’s goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
OMT Managing Director Mr. Nicolo Scannavini called the arrival of the ship a “game changer” for trade between Asia and Nigeria. He said the vessel shows the terminal’s commitment to clean shipping and strengthens its role as a major trade hub.
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), under Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, played a key role in supporting the docking of the vessel. Other stakeholders present included officials from the Nigerian Customs Service, Nigerian Shippers’ Council, and Nigeria Immigration Service, all of whom praised the milestone.
PIL’s Regional Head of Operations and Logistics, Mr. Dhruv Kohli, highlighted how the Kota Oasis will boost direct trade routes to Singapore and China, enhancing Nigeria’s international shipping connections.
Deputy Comptroller John Ejeh of the Nigeria Customs Service (Onne Port Command) reaffirmed their commitment to smooth trade operations, promising continued support for maritime growth.
The arrival of the Kota Oasis signals a new era for Nigeria’s shipping industry, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and stronger global trade links.
