A revenue collector identified simply as Emmanuel, popularly known as Meme, was shot dead on Thursday by suspected cultists in Benin City, Edo State.
The tragic incident occurred along Akugbe Street, off 2nd West Junction by Oliha Market, in Oredo Local Government Area.
According to eyewitnesses, the victim, who was a member of the Professional Drivers on Wheels, was allegedly trailed by gunmen driving in two vehicles. He reportedly tried to escape into a nearby house but was unable to enter due to metal burglary proof on the door.
The attackers opened fire, killing him on the spot and sparking panic among traders and residents who fled the area for safety. Witnesses said the attackers shot Emmanuel multiple times and left him in a pool of blood before speeding away.
Residents said the scene was chaotic, with terrified people wailing and running for cover as gunshots rang out. Men from the Nigeria Police Force, Textile Mill Road Division, later arrived and evacuated the body to a mortuary using a commercial bus.
A resident, Odion Osakue, who claimed to have witnessed the killing, described the attack as shocking and heartbreaking. He said the area has experienced rising violence in recent weeks.
Police spokesperson in Edo State, Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident but noted that further details would be released after ongoing investigations.
Although the motive has not been officially confirmed, residents believe the killing may be linked to cult-related retaliatory attacks that have plagued the city in recent months.
