Lionel Messi has reacted to Inter Miami’s 4–0 defeat to his former club, Paris Saint-Germain, which ended the Major League Soccer (MLS) side’s journey in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Inter Miami were knocked out in the Round of 16 on Sunday after a dominant performance by PSG, who now move on to face Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

PSG’s goals came from a brace by Joao Neves, an own goal by Tomas Aviles, and a strike from Achraf Hakimi.

Messi, who captains Inter Miami, couldn’t rescue his side from the heavy defeat. In a post on his official Instagram page, he expressed pride in the team’s effort while encouraging his teammates to focus on the MLS season and other upcoming competitions.

“Today the Club World Cup ends for us with defeat against the Champions League winners,” Messi wrote. “We leave with pride to have achieved our goal of reaching the top 16. Now to focus on the MLS and all that is coming.”
