There will be a new Club World Cup champion this year following Manchester City’s shock elimination by Al-Hilal in the round of 16.
The Saudi Arabian champions defeated City 4-3 after extra time in a dramatic match played in the early hours of Tuesday.
Pep Guardiola’s side took the lead in the 9th minute through Bernardo Silva, marking the fourth straight game City scored inside the first 10 minutes.
However, Al-Hilal hit back almost immediately after the break, as Marcos Leonardo equalised just 44 seconds into the second half. Three minutes later, Malcom gave the Saudi side a 2-1 lead.
Erling Haaland responded with a quick equaliser to make it 2-2.
In extra time, Kalidou Koulibaly gave Al-Hilal another leads with a powerful header from a corner, only for Phil Foden to level once again for City.
But in the 112th minute, Leonardo struck again, sealing a famous win for Al-Hilal, the 2021 AFC Champions League winners.
The result ends Manchester City’s hopes of retaining their world title and ensures that the 2025 Club World Cup will produce a new champion.
