Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Mr Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the recent killing of 10 people in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
In a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, Obi described the attack as “gruesome” and called on the authorities to carry out a thorough investigation to arrest and prosecute those behind the killings.
“I am deeply saddened by the gruesome killing of 10 innocent citizens in Ogboji, Orumba South LGA of Anambra State,” Obi said.
While expressing condolences to the families of the victims, he also prayed for the recovery of those injured in the attack. Obi warned against accepting such acts of violence as normal and stressed the need to protect citizens’ rights across Nigeria.
“This act of unprovoked violence is totally unacceptable. The freedom to live, move, and assemble peacefully anywhere in Nigeria is a fundamental right that must be protected. No individual or group should be allowed to operate above the law,” he added.
Obi urged the government and relevant security agencies to act swiftly to prevent further bloodshed in the region. He emphasized that justice must be served to rebuild public trust and discourage similar attacks in the future.
“I call for a prompt and thorough investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for this heinous crime. The authorities must act decisively. Justice must not only be done but be seen to be done, to restore public confidence and deter future violence,” he stated.
The killing, which occurred in Ogboji community, has left residents in shock and raised concerns about rising insecurity in parts of Anambra State. The identity and motive of the attackers remain unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
Security experts and community leaders have called for increased surveillance and intelligence gathering to stop the spread of criminal activity in the area. This latest attack adds to growing concerns about safety in the South-East, where various communities have suffered from violent clashes, killings, and kidnappings.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities in Anambra State have yet to issue a full statement, but investigations are said to be ongoing.
